AI SEO Services That Get You Ranked on Google and Cited by AI

AI SEO services optimize a business's website and wider web presence so it ranks in Google AND gets cited in AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. They combine traditional SEO with generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO).

That "and" is the whole job. Ranking and being cited used to be the same outcome. They have come apart, and most businesses are still only buying half the work.

Why AI SEO Services Exist Now

Search did not get smaller. It split.

The traffic side moved first: AI search traffic grew roughly 527% year over year, from about 17,000 to 107,100 sessions across 19 tracked GA4 properties comparing January–May 2024 with the same months in 2025 (Previsible AI Traffic Report, via Semrush). Small in absolute terms, steep in slope — and the visitors are worth more. Semrush puts the average AI-search visitor at 4.4x the value of the average traditional organic visitor, measured on conversion rate.

Then the visibility side came apart. The overlap between Google's top-ranking pages and the sources AI answers actually cite has collapsed from about 70% to under 20% (Brandlight analysis, published in 5W Public Relations' May 2026 GEO research). Google's own AI box tells the same story from the inside: Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs and found only 38% of cited pages also rank in the top 10 — down from 76% eight months earlier (Ahrefs, March 2026). Nearly a third of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking beyond position 100.

Read those two numbers together and the conclusion is uncomfortable: your Google ranking is no longer a reliable proxy for your AI visibility. You can be #1 and absent. You can be unranked and cited. The two systems now run on partly different signals, and nothing about winning one of them wins you the other for free.

Most of your competitors have not noticed. Erlin's own 2026 benchmark reports that only 16% of brands systematically track AI search performance (Erlin) — a vendor's number, so weight it accordingly, but it matches what we find in audits. The other 84% are not losing on purpose. They just have no instrument pointed at the channel.

— "In the audits we run, the most common finding isn't bad SEO. It's good SEO that no AI engine can read, verify, or cite." — Thomas, Founder of AISEO USA, 16 years in digital marketing

That is the gap AI SEO services close: deliberately, measurably, and while the space is still uncontested.

The Six Types of AI SEO Service

Here is the honest state of this category: when you ask an AI engine what AI SEO services are, the taxonomy it repeats back sorts vendors — tracking platforms, outreach shops, content tools, legacy suites with AI bolted on, full-service agencies. That is a useful shopping list. It is not a useful description of the work, because it tells you who to buy from without telling you what has to be true for an AI engine to cite you.

So we sort by the work. There are six types of AI SEO service because there are exactly six places a business drops out of an AI answer. Each type exists to fix one of them.

# Type of service The failure it fixes The question it answers
1 Diagnostic You don't know you're missing What do the engines say about us today?
2 Extraction The engine can't lift a clean answer from your page Can we be quoted?
3 Comprehension The engine can't verify what you claim Can we be believed?
4 Identity The engine can't tell who you are Do they know we exist as an entity?
5 Architecture The engine never reaches your best page Can we be retrieved?
6 Accountability You can't prove any of it moved Did it work?

Run down that list against your own site and you will usually find you are strong in two categories and absent in four. That asymmetry is the point of the framework: AI SEO services are not one deliverable sold at six thicknesses. They are six different repairs, and buying the wrong one is how programs stall.

1. Diagnostic: LLM Visibility Audit

We query ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews with the prompts your buyers actually type — not keyword strings, but sentences like "who's the best commercial roofer in Dallas" or "compare X vs Y for a 40-person team" — then log where you appear, where competitors appear, and which URL each engine cited to justify the answer.

Two things make this harder than it looks. Answers are non-deterministic, so a single query proves nothing; we run a fixed prompt set repeatedly and report share of voice, not anecdotes. And engines disagree sharply with each other. Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index, built on 126 million U.S. AI search prompts collected January–April 2026, found ChatGPT averages 15 sources per response while Gemini averages just 3 (Semrush). A three-source engine is a brutally narrow doorway. Being "in AI" on ChatGPT tells you almost nothing about Gemini — which is why an audit that tests one engine is not an audit.

You get a scored baseline and a prioritized fix list. This is the deep version of our free AI visibility audit.

2. Extraction: AI Overview & Zero-Click Optimization

Extraction work is about being liftable. An answer engine is not choosing your page; it is choosing a passage. If your answer is buried in paragraph nine, hedged across two sentences and dependent on the paragraph above it to make sense, it cannot be lifted cleanly, and a worse competitor with a tidier passage wins the citation.

We restructure priority pages around units engines can take whole: a 40–100 word direct answer under a question-form heading, self-contained sections, comparison tables, and definitions that survive being quoted out of context.

Google's AI Overviews are the highest-volume version of this surface, and they are moving down the funnel. Semrush tracked 10M+ keywords through 2025 and found AI Overview coverage swinging from 6.49% of queries in January to 24.61% in July and 15.69% in November — volatile, but the direction that matters is commercial: AI Overviews on commercial queries more than doubled, from 8.15% to 18.57%, and on transactional queries went from 1.98% to 13.94% (Semrush AI Overviews study). The box arrived on informational queries first. It is now showing up on the queries that pay you. Full method on our AI Overview optimization page, and the discipline in depth under answer engine optimization services.

3. Comprehension: Schema & Structured Data

Comprehension work is about being verifiable. Before an engine repeats a claim about your business, it wants to see the claim stated in a machine-readable form and corroborated somewhere it already trusts. Prose is an assertion. Schema is a record.

We build a connected graph — Organization, Service, FAQPage, LocalBusiness, Product — with consistent @id references, so the machine reading your site gets one coherent object instead of six disconnected pages that each mention a company. Then we make sure your FAQ markup matches the visible answer word for word, and that dateModified reflects a real edit. Engines discount timestamps that lie, and faked freshness is one of the few things that can actively cost you.

This is the highest-leverage technical layer in AI search optimization, and it is boring, which is exactly why it is available.

4. Identity: Keyword & Entity Mapping

Identity work is about existing as a thing, not a string. Large language models do not store your keyword rankings. They store relationships between entities — this company, that service, this city, that person — assembled from every description of you on the open web. If those descriptions disagree, the model's confidence in you drops, and low confidence reads as "don't cite this."

So this is classic keyword research plus the unglamorous part: making your name, category, service list, locations and people describable in one consistent sentence, and then making that sentence true everywhere — your site, your profiles, your directory listings, the third-party pages that mention you.

Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index found something that makes the stakes concrete: on Gemini, the overlap between the brands mentioned in an answer and the domains cited as sources fell as low as 30%. Being talked about and being sourced are two different competitions. You have to win both, and identity work is how you enter the first one. This is the core of LLM SEO.

5. Architecture: AI-Powered Internal Linking

Architecture work is about retrieval. Engines increasingly answer a question by silently fanning it out into sub-questions and retrieving a different page for each one — which is Ahrefs' explanation for why so many AI Overview citations come from pages nowhere near the top 10. If your site buries the page that answers sub-question four, you lose that fragment of the answer to whoever surfaced theirs.

We map every page's topical relationships, then build internal links that concentrate authority on money pages and let any crawler — Googlebot or GPTBot — understand the whole structure in one pass. Descriptive anchors, no orphans, no dead ends. It is the cheapest work on this list and the most consistently skipped.

6. Accountability: Measurement & Reporting

Accountability work is what turns the other five from an opinion into a program. Monthly: rankings and organic traffic, brand mentions and citations across the four major engines, AI-referral sessions segmented in GA4 (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot arrive as referrers — most analytics setups are silently lumping them into "other"), and leads.

Every report ties activity to outcomes against the baseline the audit set. No adjectives. Receipts.

03

Traditional SEO vs AI SEO: What Actually Changes

Traditional SEO services are not obsolete and nothing below says otherwise. Crawlability, content and authority are still the substrate — answer engines cannot cite a page they cannot fetch. What changes is what you are optimizing toward.

Traditional SEO AI SEO
Goal Rank a page in the top 10 Be the passage the answer is built from
Surface The blue links AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity — plus the blue links
Unit of competition The page The passage and the entity
Primary metric Rankings, sessions, CTR Citations, share of voice, AI-referral sessions, mentions
What wins Comprehensive, authoritative content Extractable, verifiable, corroborated, fresh content
Deliverables Technical fixes, content, links All of that + entity mapping, schema graph, answer blocks, AI crawler access, prompt-set tracking
Feedback loop Rank tracker, weekly Prompt set across four engines, monthly
Time to signal Months Weeks on answer surfaces; months on rankings

The practical read: AI SEO is not a replacement discipline, it is a second scoreboard measured on the same asset. That is why we run both as one program. Generative engine optimization services without sound SEO is a roof without walls — and sound SEO without GEO is a house nobody can find. If you want the acronym boundaries drawn precisely, we did that on AEO vs GEO.

04

Who AI Engines Cite for This Query Right Now

Here is the part no competitor on this query will show you: we run the diagnostic on ourselves, in public.

When we logged AI answers for buyer-style prompts about AI SEO in July 2026, three patterns held across engines:

  1. "What are AI SEO services?" — engines lift a taxonomy. The most-repeated one is a five-category list of AI SEO vendors (tracking platforms, outreach services, content tools, technical suites with AI add-ons, full-service agencies). Whoever publishes the clearest categorical list gets quoted, regardless of domain authority.
  2. "How much do AI SEO services cost?" — engines lift a single cost band from whichever page states one plainly. A vague "it depends" page is unciteable on a cost query by construction.
  3. "AI SEO vs GEO vs AEO" — engines lift a definitional split. The pages that win it are the ones that define the acronyms in adjacent sentences rather than across three separate posts.

Notice what all three have in common. None of them is "the highest DR page wins." They are all passage shapes: a list, a number, a definition. That is the actual mechanic behind the Ahrefs finding — the engine is shopping for a liftable unit, and it will go to page 11 to get a better one.

That is also why the section you are reading exists in this shape. Everything above is applied to this page.

Want the same read on your own domain? That is what the free AI visibility audit produces, and the engine-specific version lives under ChatGPT SEO services.

05

How We Do It: The Relevance Engine, Step by Step

Our process is one loop, run monthly, in this order. The order is not cosmetic — each step is worthless without the one before it.

  1. Baseline. Fixed prompt set across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews, plus classic rank and traffic. We record what is true before we touch anything, because "we think it improved" is not a report.
  2. Access check. Can GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended actually fetch you? Robots directives, CDN rules, bot-management settings, JavaScript rendering. We verify in server logs, not by reading robots.txt and assuming. This step disqualifies more sites than any other.
  3. Entity build. One canonical description of the business, reconciled everywhere it appears. Fix the disagreements first; they are cheap and they gate everything downstream.
  4. Schema graph. Connected, ID-linked, matching the visible page. Verification layer for step 3.
  5. Passage engineering. Answer blocks, question-form headings, tables, definitions — on the pages tied to revenue, in the order your buyers ask about them.
  6. Corroboration. Earn mentions and consistent listings on the sources engines already draw from for your category. This is the step most agencies skip because it is the slowest, and it is the one that converts "fetchable" into "cited."
  7. Re-measure and reprioritize. Same prompt set, same day of month. Whatever moved gets more budget; whatever didn't gets diagnosed, not repeated.

Steps 1–4 usually produce visible answer-surface movement in weeks. Steps 5–7 compound over months. We sequence it that way on purpose: the fast wins fund the patience the slow ones need. If you want the tactic-level version, how to rank in ChatGPT and how to get cited by AI publish the playbook.

06

What Do AI SEO Services Cost?

We do not publish our rates, because a real number requires looking at your site first — two businesses asking for the same thing can need wildly different amounts of work. What we will publish is the market, so you can read anyone's quote intelligently, including ours.

General SEO retainers. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO service providers and found an average monthly retainer of $2,917 overall — $3,209/mo for agencies, $1,348/mo for freelancers (Ahrefs SEO pricing survey). That is the floor the AI work is built on top of.
Dedicated GEO/AI-search programs. Published US agency guides put GEO engagements at roughly $3,000–$25,000/mo, tiered by content-library size and competition — around $3,000–$6,000 for an audit-and-restructure entry program, $6,000–$12,000 for building category authority, and $12,000–$25,000+ for large libraries in contested markets (RevvGrowth GEO pricing, April 2026).
The spread is the signal. An 8x range across "the same service" tells you the category is not standardized yet. It means the quote is meaningless until you know which of the six types of work it actually buys — which is precisely why we sort by work and not by package.

Those are the market's numbers, not a quote from us. What your site needs depends on how much ground there is to make up, which is what the free audit establishes. For the full market breakdown by business size and scope, see our guide to AI SEO pricing.

One thing no budget buys: a guarantee. No one can guarantee AI citations — anyone who does is lying. The engines control their own outputs. Our work raises the probability and shows you the trend monthly.

07

Who Should Hire AI SEO Experts?

US businesses whose customers ask AI before they ask a human. In practice that is local services, B2B and SaaS, e-commerce, healthcare, legal, home services, and education — anywhere the buying question is a sentence rather than a keyword.

The honest disqualifiers matter too. If your site cannot be crawled, fix that first; AI SEO on a broken foundation is money set on fire. If your revenue is entirely neighborhood-based, start with local SEO services — local answers are increasingly AI-mediated, but the map pack still pays the bills first. And if nobody at your company will own a monthly 45-minute review, no program survives; the compounding is in the loop, not the launch.

We work with US businesses across exactly these categories — clients include Farelanes, Marietta Coin Laundry, Prepare for the SAT and Integrity Images.

If you want to hire AI SEO experts rather than buy a package, the sequence is simple: run the audit, read what the engines actually say about you, then decide which of the six types of work you are missing. That conversation costs nothing and takes 30 minutes.

Questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What are AI SEO services?

AI SEO services are optimization work that makes a business visible in both traditional search results and AI-generated answers. That includes technical SEO, structured data, entity mapping, answer-formatted content, AI crawler access, and citation tracking — covering Google alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

What is the difference between AI SEO, GEO, AEO and LLMO?

AI SEO is the umbrella: everything that makes you visible across search engines and AI answers. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the sub-discipline of earning citations inside generated answers — evidence, corroboration and access. AEO (answer engine optimization) is the sub-discipline of formatting content so an engine can extract and quote it cleanly. LLMO (large language model optimization) is used interchangeably with GEO, and increasingly refers specifically to how a model describes your brand from training and retrieval, rather than which URL it links. In practice: AI SEO is the program, GEO and AEO are the two halves of it, and LLMO is a synonym you will see in vendor marketing.

How do I hire AI SEO experts?

Ask four questions and the market sorts itself. First: which engines do you test, and can I see the prompt set? A vendor testing only ChatGPT is testing only one part of the surface. Second: show me a report where a number went down and what you did about it. Third: which of the six types of work — diagnostic, extraction, comprehension, identity, architecture, accountability — does this quote actually buy? Fourth: do you guarantee citations? The correct answer is no, and anyone who says yes has told you everything you need to know.

What are large language models doing to search?

They are separating ranking from visibility. Large language models answer the question instead of listing pages, and they choose sources on partly different signals than Google's ranking systems — which is why the overlap between Google's top results and AI-cited sources has fallen from about 70% to under 20% (Brandlight, via 5W Public Relations, 2026), and why only 38% of Google AI Overview citations now come from pages ranking in the top 10 (Ahrefs, 2026). The practical effect: rankings still matter, but they no longer carry you into the answer automatically.

How do you measure AI SEO success?

Four things, monthly: brand mentions and citations across the major AI engines, AI-referral sessions in GA4, classic rankings and organic traffic, and leads. The baseline is set during the audit, so every report shows movement against a documented starting point rather than a vague impression. We run the same prompt set on the same schedule, because answers vary between runs and a single query proves nothing.

How long do AI SEO services take to work?

Answer-surface movement often appears within weeks, because engines refresh their source pools far faster than Google re-ranks pages. Classic ranking gains still take months. We sequence the fast work first — access, entities, schema, answer blocks — then let the slower compounding work build underneath it. Anyone quoting you a date for a citation is guessing.

Do we need AI SEO if we already rank well on Google?

Usually yes, and your rankings are the reason it is worth doing. Under 20% of AI-cited sources now appear in Google's top 10 for the same query (Brandlight, via 5W Public Relations), so strong rankings no longer transfer automatically. The upside is that existing authority is raw material: a site that already ranks typically needs extraction and comprehension work rather than a rebuild, which is the faster half of the program.

What does an engagement start with?

The LLM visibility audit, always. What each engine says about you, whether AI crawlers can actually fetch your site, how your structured data scores, and which of the six types of work you are missing. We scope from that — never the other way around.
