This is how to do generative engine optimization in practice, in the order dependencies demand. Don't skip ahead: answer-first content is worthless if crawlers can't fetch it.

Phase 1 — Access: can the engines even read you?

1. Verify every AI crawler gets a 200 — don't assume it

Check that robots.txt allows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, Google-Extended, and Bingbot — then go further and test what your CDN or firewall actually serves them, because robots.txt is only a request, and security layers override it silently.

This item leads the checklist because it burned us first-hand. In July 2026 we found a single Cloudflare WAF rule on our own site — an "AI bot blocker" matching on user-agent — quietly returning 403s to Googlebot, Bingbot, PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot, and Claude-SearchBot. Every page looked perfect in a browser; to every engine that mattered, the site didn't exist. Verify: curl -A "GPTBot" -I https://yoursite.com/ (repeat per bot UA) returns 200, and Search Console's live URL test fetches cleanly.

2. Fix the indexing plumbing

An XML sitemap that lists every real page, one canonical per URL, no accidental noindex, and fast, clean HTML. Critically for GEO: your core content must be present in the raw HTML, not assembled by JavaScript after load — most AI crawlers read the source, not the rendered page. Verify: view source (not inspect element) and confirm your headings and body copy are there.

Phase 2 — Identity: does the machine know who you are?

3. Make your entity consistent everywhere

Identical business name, address, phone, and description across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, and data aggregators. Engines cross-reference before they recommend; if "Acme Marketing" here is "Acme Marketing Group LLC" there, the model can't confirm you're one entity — and ambiguity loses citations. Verify: search your brand name in ChatGPT and Perplexity and check the description they give back matches reality.

4. Ship Organization, Person, and page-level schema

Organization schema with sameAs links to your real profiles; a Person node for your named author with credentials; Article and FAQPage markup on content. Schema doesn't rank you by itself — it removes guesswork, and machines reward whatever they don't have to guess. Verify: Google's Rich Results Test passes, and the schema's claims match the visible page exactly.

Phase 3 — Content: can an engine lift your answer?

5. Restructure pages answer-first

Under each question-style H2, put the direct answer in the first 40–100 words — then expand. Generative engines quote passages, not pages; the page that states "A kitchen remodel in Austin typically runs $30,000–$80,000" in sentence one beats the page that winds up to it in paragraph six. Add a TL;DR block to long pieces. Verify: paste your H2 into ChatGPT as a question — could the paragraph below it serve as the reply, verbatim?

6. Add cited statistics and named expertise

Pages with verifiable numbers and attributed quotes get cited more, because they give the engine something concrete to repeat and a source to point to. Original data — your own survey, benchmark, or documented result — is the strongest version, since engines can only get it from you.

7. Build extractable formats: tables, lists, FAQs

Comparison tables, numbered steps, and genuine FAQ sections are the easiest structures for a model to parse and reproduce. Answer the questions people actually ask (mine "People Also Ask" and your own sales calls), in 40–80 words each. Verify: each FAQ answer stands alone with no "as mentioned above" dependencies.

8. Keep it fresh and dated

Visible published/updated dates, and real updates when facts change — engines demonstrably favor recent sources for fast-moving topics, and "2026" queries are how much of this space gets searched. Stale stats are worse than no stats: a model that spots a superseded number discounts the whole page.

Phase 4 — Corroboration: does anyone else vouch for you?

9. Earn third-party mentions engines trust

Generative engines triangulate. Before recommending you, they check whether independent sources agree: "best of" roundups, review platforms, industry directories, press, Reddit and forum threads. Your own site can't supply this — it has to be earned through digital PR, genuine community participation, and being listed where your category gets compared. Rank tracking misses the point when the answer box doesn't show ranks.
