What does "checking your AI visibility" actually mean?
AI visibility is whether AI engines — ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity — mention, recommend, or cite your business when someone asks a question you should win. Checking it means measuring two separate things, and most people only ever think about the first:
- The mention half: when a real buyer's question goes into an AI engine, does your name come out? This you check by asking, the way a customer would.
- The access half: can AI crawlers and search bots actually fetch and understand your site? If they can't, the mention half is over before it starts. This you check with your robots.txt, your firewall, and a scan.
Why bother at all? Because the answer layer is where buying decisions increasingly get made. Pew Research tracked nearly 69,000 real Google searches and found that when an AI summary appears, users click a traditional result in only 8% of visits, versus 15% without one. Meanwhile ChatGPT passed 800 million weekly active users in late 2025 — a meaningful slice of them asking it "who should I hire." If you don't know what those engines say about you, you're not managing the channel where the decision happens.
Here's the full method, step by step.
Step 1: Write down the five questions your customers actually ask (3 minutes)
Don't test your brand name — test your money queries. A customer who already knows your name doesn't need AI to find you. The queries that matter are the ones a stranger types the day they're ready to buy:
Write them exactly as a customer would phrase them, typos of intent and all. These five prompts are your test suite — you'll reuse them every time you re-check.
Step 2: Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity in a clean session (7 minutes)
Now run the ai visibility test itself. The clean-session part matters: if you've ever chatted with these tools about your own business, memory and personalization will flatter you. So:
- ChatGPT: use a Temporary Chat (or log out) so memory is off, and ask with search enabled.
- Gemini and Perplexity: use a private/incognito browser window, not logged in.
Paste each of your five questions and record three things per engine: Was I named? Who was named instead? Which sources did the engine cite? A simple grid is enough:
| Your query | ChatGPT | Gemini | Perplexity | Who got named instead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Best [service] in [city]" | Named / Absent | Named / Absent | Named / Absent | Competitor A, B |
| "[Service] near me — recommend?" | Named / Absent | Named / Absent | Named / Absent | ... |
| "How much does [service] cost?" | Cited / Absent | Cited / Absent | Cited / Absent | ... |
| "Who should I hire for [job]?" | Named / Absent | Named / Absent | Named / Absent | ... |
| "[Brand] reviews — legit?" | Accurate / Wrong / Empty | Accurate / Wrong / Empty | Accurate / Wrong / Empty | — |
Two tips from running hundreds of these: ask each question twice — AI answers vary run to run, and a name that appears in one of two runs is a toehold, not a win. And screenshot everything; you'll want the before pictures later.
If you came here wondering "am I visible to ChatGPT," this grid is the honest answer — not a feeling, a count.
Step 3: Check Google's AI Overviews for the same queries (3 minutes)
Open an incognito window, search your five queries in regular Google, and look at the AI Overview box at the top when one appears. You're checking two things: whether you're mentioned in the summary text, and whether any of your pages appear in its citation panel.
Don't assume your rankings protect you here. Ahrefs found that only 38% of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking in Google's top 10 — down from 76% a year earlier. Ranking #3 and being absent from the AI Overview is now a completely normal, completely losable position: per the Pew data above, most users who see the summary never click below it.
Step 4: Check whether AI crawlers can even reach your site (4 minutes)
This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's the one that bites hardest. Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for lines blocking GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, or Bingbot. A Disallow: / under any of those means you've told that engine's crawler to stay out — sometimes a leftover from a 2023-era "block AI" plugin setting nobody remembers.
Then check the layer above robots.txt: your firewall or CDN. I learned this one the embarrassing way. On our own site, a Cloudflare WAF rule called "Block AI bots by User Agent" was silently returning 403 errors to Googlebot, Bingbot, GPTBot, and PerplexityBot — while the origin server returned 200 to everyone, so every test we ran ourselves looked perfect. Nothing on the site was "broken." We only found it by reading the firewall rulesets through the API. If your site sits behind Cloudflare or a security plugin, check its bot-blocking settings by name, or use your host's tools to fetch a page as Googlebot and confirm you get a 200, not a 403.
While you're in there, see whether you have an llms.txt file — a plain-text map that tells AI systems what your site offers and which pages matter. It takes minutes with a free llms.txt generator and removes one more excuse for an engine to misread you.
Step 5: Run the free checker for the technical half (1 minute)
Steps 2–3 covered the mention half by hand. For the access-and-readiness half, a scan is faster and more thorough than eyeballing source code. Our free AI visibility checker takes your URL and scores five dimensions — crawler access, structured data, answer-readiness, entity signals, and technical foundation — with no signup needed to see the score. It's the same technical pass we run at the start of every engagement, minus the human.
That gives you a number for the half of AI visibility you can't check by asking questions: whether machines can fetch, parse, and confidently attribute your content.
Step 6: Read your results and decide what to fix (2 minutes)
Put the two halves together and you land in one of three situations:
Whichever bucket you're in, the stakes are rising: Semrush found the average AI search visitor converts at 4.4 times the rate of a traditional organic search visitor. Fewer visitors, far warmer — because the AI already made the shortlist before the click.
— "Every owner who runs this check has the same two reactions: shock at who the AI names instead of them, and relief that it's finally measurable. You can't win a channel you've never looked at." — Thomas, Founder of AISEO USA
What if you don't want to do this by hand?
Fair — the manual check is doable in 20 minutes, but it's easy to under-ask, over-read one lucky mention, or miss a firewall block you can't see from a browser. That's exactly what our free AI visibility audit exists for: a human strategist runs your real buyer prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity, checks your crawler access and entity consistency, and sends back a scored report with the fixes in priority order. Two form fields, no credit card, no sales ambush.
Do the DIY check today either way. Even if you never spend a dollar on this, knowing what the machines say about your business is now as basic as knowing your Google ranking was in 2015.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?
Open a Temporary Chat in ChatGPT so memory and personalization are off, enable search, and ask the questions a stranger would — "best [your service] in [your city]," "who should I hire for [job]" — not your brand name. Ask each twice, since answers vary between runs. To check if ChatGPT recommends my business is really to count: named in how many runs, out of how many asks?
Is there a free AI visibility test?
Yes — two kinds. The manual test in this guide is free and takes about 20 minutes: ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google your five money queries in clean sessions and log who's named. For the technical half, our free AI visibility checker needs only your URL, and scores crawler access, structured data, answer-readiness, entity signals, and technical foundation in about 30 seconds.
How often should I check my AI visibility?
Monthly is the practical cadence for most businesses — AI answers shift as models update, sources refresh, and competitors publish. Re-run the same five queries in clean sessions and compare against last month's grid. Check immediately after any site migration, firewall or CDN change, or robots.txt edit, because those are the moments crawler access silently breaks and takes weeks to notice otherwise.
Why do AI answers about my business change every time I ask?
Because generative engines don't return a fixed ranking — they compose each answer fresh, sampling from sources and weighing them slightly differently every run. Phrasing, search mode, and location also shift results. That volatility is why you ask each query twice and track mention frequency over time, not a single pass-fail. A brand named consistently across runs and engines has durable visibility; a one-time mention is luck.
What is a good AI visibility score?
On our checker's 0–100 scale, 80 or above means your site is technically ready for AI engines; 55–79 means real gaps — usually missing structured data or weak answer formatting — are limiting you; below 55 usually includes a serious problem like blocked crawlers. But pair any score with the mention test: a technically clean site nobody's heard of still loses the recommendation to a better-known competitor.
Can I check AI visibility without any tools at all?
Mostly, yes. Asking the engines your customers' questions in incognito or temporary sessions costs nothing, and reading your own robots.txt is a URL away. The genuinely hard part to do by hand is the layer you can't see from a browser — firewall rules serving 403s to crawlers while showing you a perfect site. Ours did exactly that. For that layer, use a scanner or fetch pages as Googlebot via your host's tools.
What is an AI visibility report?
An AI visibility report documents how AI engines currently treat your business: which prompts were tested, where you were named or absent, which competitors and sources the engines cited, whether crawlers can access your site, and a prioritized fix list. Screenshots make it a defensible baseline you can compare against next quarter. Our free AI visibility audit delivers exactly this format, run by a human strategist.
