What Is Entity SEO? Things, Not Strings

For its first decade, Google matched the words in your query against the words on a page. That changed in 2012, when Google introduced the Knowledge Graph — described in its own announcement as "an intelligent model… that understands real-world entities and their relationships to one another: things, not strings." Search stopped being a text-matching problem and became an understanding problem.

An entity is any distinct, well-defined thing an engine can identify and reason about: a company, a person, a place, a product, a concept. "AISEO USA" is an entity. So is its founder, its city, and the service it sells. Entity SEO is the discipline of making sure the machines that now mediate search — Google's ranking systems, its AI Overviews, and large language models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — hold one accurate, complete, disambiguated record of your business, and can tell it apart from every other similarly named thing.

How Google and AI Models Resolve an Entity

When your business is mentioned anywhere — a directory, a news article, a review, your own site — an engine can't assume it knows which real-world thing the mention refers to. Large language models run their own version of this — twice. During training, consistent mentions of your brand across the public web consolidate into a stable internal representation of "you." At answer time, search-enabled models retrieve live pages and cross-check them before writing. (The retrieval half is covered in depth in how generative engines work.) Either way, a model deciding whether to recommend your business is really deciding whether its consolidated record of you is confident enough to stake an answer on. Fuzzy entity, no recommendation.

Why Entities Matter More Than Keywords in the AI Era

For twenty years, the winning move was to rank a page. That proxy is breaking. Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs and found the share of AI Overview citations drawn from Google's top-10 organic results fell from 76% to 38% in a single year. A top ranking no longer reliably predicts being cited — the AI is building a different leaderboard.

What sits near the top of that new leaderboard is your entity. When Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands, it found that brand web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664 — far stronger than backlinks at 0.218, roughly three times the pull. Being talked about across the web, consistently and by name, is now a leading input to being cited. Corroboration is the sibling signal: engines trust a fact more when independent sources agree on it, which is why Semrush, after analyzing more than 100 million AI citations, found Reddit and Wikipedia among the most-cited sources across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity — community-vetted, entity-rich domains.

The stakes scale with the audience. With ChatGPT alone reaching 800 million weekly users as of October 2025, the entity your customers meet inside an AI answer is now, for many of them, the first impression of your brand. If the model can't resolve you, it names someone it can.

The Techniques: How to Build Your Entity

Entity SEO is less about writing more content and more about engineering the record engines keep about you. Six techniques do most of the work.

1. Organization and Person schema

Structured data is how you hand engines your facts in a format they don't have to guess at. Google's own Organization structured data documentation defines fields for your legal name, logo, contact points, and identity links. Publish an Organization node with a stable identifier so every page references the same entity, and attach a Person node for your founder or authors — engines trust organizations partly through the verifiable people behind them. 2. sameAs — the identity map

The sameAs property declares that different URLs describe one and the same entity: your website, your LinkedIn, your Google Business Profile, your Wikidata item, your Crunchbase page. Google's docs describe it as a link "to your organization's profile page on a social media or review site." It hands engines the identity map they'd otherwise have to infer, collapsing scattered mentions into a single, higher-confidence record. It's cheap to add and disproportionately valuable.

3. Consistent NAP and naming

Name, address, and phone number — NAP — must match everywhere. So must the name itself. "Smith & Co.," "Smith and Company," and "SmithCo" read as three strings and three half-entities. One canonical name and one canonical description, repeated identically across every profile, is the highest-leverage entity work most businesses can do this quarter.

4. Google Business Profile

For any local or service business, the Google Business Profile is the single most important entity source. It is the record that feeds the knowledge panel and anchors your business to a place, a category, and a set of reviews. Claim it, complete every field, and keep it identical to your site.

5. Wikidata and Wikipedia

Wikidata is a structured, machine-readable knowledge base that both Google and AI models draw on, and its entries are far more accessible than Wikipedia's. A factual Wikidata item with sourced statements corroborates your entity directly. Wikipedia demands genuine notability and punishes anyone forcing it — treat it as an outcome of being noteworthy, not a task.

6. Brand mentions and disambiguation

Finally, get talked about — by name — across the web: reviews, roundups, forums, local press, industry directories. Every independent mention that states the same facts is another vote for your record. And wherever confusion is possible, disambiguate: pair your name with the facts that make you unmistakable — your city, your specialty, your founder — so no engine ever merges you with a namesake.

How Entity SEO Drives AI Citations

Put those techniques together and the payoff shows up in two places engines control: Google's knowledge panel — your branded search real estate — and AI answers, where a confident entity record is a precondition for being named at all. This is the entity layer of any serious generative engine optimization program, and it's foundational to AI SEO services generally: you cannot be cited as an entity that engines can't resolve.

The evidence points one direction. Where Businesses Lose Entity Visibility

They exist only on their own website. No Wikidata entry, thin directory presence. A single-source entity is an unverified claim, and engines discount claims.
Fragmented naming. Three spellings of the brand become three half-entities and one diluted record.
No sameAs wiring. Their schema never tells engines that their site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, and Wikidata item are the same thing — so the mentions never consolidate.
Anonymous humans. No author or founder entity to lend the organization credibility.
Stale data after a move or rebrand. Old addresses and phone numbers linger on Yelp, Apple Maps, and directories. Every contradiction caps the confidence score, and Google — and the models trained partly on those stale sources — hedge or recommend a competitor whose record is boringly perfect.

How to Build Your Entity, in Order

Work the record in sequence: unify your name and one-sentence description everywhere; fix NAP consistency across every directory that mentions you; wire your schema graph with a stable identifier and exhaustive sameAs links; build the missing knowledge-base entries — Wikidata, Crunchbase, the directories your industry actually uses; attach real, verifiable people as author and founder entities; then earn brand mentions and monitor what the engines actually say about you, monthly.

You can run a five-minute version of the test yourself. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity to name good providers in your category and city, then Google your own brand name. If a competitor returns a knowledge panel and gets named with specifics while you return a bare website link and no mention, that gap is an entity gap — and it's fixable.
