What Is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is the conversational, AI-first search experience inside Google Search. Instead of returning ranked blue links, it uses Gemini to research your question across the web and write one complete answer with cited sources, follow-up capability, and increasingly, custom generated layouts. Launched in 2025, it passed one billion monthly users by May 2026.

Updated July 2026. By Thomas, Founder of AISEO USA — 16 years in digital marketing.

AI Mode is not a chatbot bolted onto Google, and it's not the same thing as the summaries you see above normal results. It's Google's answer to a structural question — what should search look like when an AI can just answer? — and it's the clearest preview of where all of Google Search is heading. Here's what it is, how it works, how it differs from the Gemini app, and why it now decides whether customers ever hear your business's name.

How does Google AI Mode work?

You type (or speak, or photograph) a question — including the long, messy, multi-part kind you'd never have given old Google. AI Mode then runs a technique Google calls query fan-out: it breaks your question into multiple related sub-searches, runs them across Google's index in parallel, and has Gemini synthesize the results into one answer with cited links. Ask a follow-up and it keeps the context, like a conversation.

Under the hood it runs Google's frontier models — a custom Gemini 2.5 at the 2025 rollout, upgraded to Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default at I/O 2026. The same event added generated custom layouts ("generative UI"), search agents that can monitor topics or book services, and multimodal input including images, files, and browser tabs. The direction of travel is plain: less "list of places to look," more "finished research."

02

When did AI Mode launch, and how big is it now?

Date Milestone
March 2025 AI Mode introduced as a Labs experiment for US testers
May 2025 (I/O) Rolled out to everyone in the US as a Search tab; query fan-out detailed
July 2025 Roughly 100 million monthly users in the US and India
May 2026 (I/O) Past one billion monthly users; queries "more than doubled every quarter"; Gemini 3.5 Flash becomes the default model
June 2026 Sundar Pichai describes the shift from classic search to AI Mode as "a continuum" — with "sources and links... always there as part of it"

From experiment to a billion users in fourteen months — faster adoption than almost any search feature Google has shipped. Whether that trajectory ends in an AI-only Google is its own question; our honest read is in is Google becoming AI-only.

What is Google AI Mode vs Gemini?

They're constantly confused because one powers the other. The clean split:

Google AI Mode Gemini (the app)
What it is A search experience inside Google Search A standalone AI assistant app
Built on Gemini models + Google's live search index The same Gemini models
Primary job Answering search questions with cited web sources General assistance: writing, coding, analysis, planning
Where you use it google.com and the Google app gemini.google.com and the Gemini app
Scale 1B+ monthly users 750M+ monthly active users

So: Gemini is the brain; AI Mode is Google Search using that brain. The Gemini app is a different product wearing the same brain. For a business, the distinction barely changes the work — both retrieve from the web and both decide whether to mention you — which is why Gemini optimization and AI Mode visibility are one discipline, not two.

AI Mode is also not the same as AI Overviews — the automatic summaries at the top of regular results. Overviews trigger on their own for roughly one in six searches; AI Mode is the full experience you enter deliberately. The complete head-to-head, including which is more accurate, is in Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews.

What does AI Mode mean for your business?

It changes the shape of being found. Classic Google gave every query ten chances to include you; AI Mode gives it one answer, which names a handful of sources and businesses and omits everyone else. Three practical consequences:

  1. The consideration set forms inside the answer. When someone asks AI Mode for "a structural engineer near Boise who does older homes," the businesses named in the response are the shortlist. There is no page two. Visibility is now binary — cited or absent.

  2. Your entity matters more than your keywords. Because Gemini reasons about businesses as entities — what you do, where, for whom, corroborated by whom — a company described consistently across its site, Google Business Profile, reviews, and the wider web is dramatically easier to name than one that's vague or contradictory. That corroboration layer is the substance of generative engine optimization.

  3. Eligibility is still plain SEO. Google's official guidance is that no special optimization exists for AI Mode — indexed, snippet-eligible, genuinely useful pages are the requirement (we've translated the full guidance here). The competition on top of eligibility — being the clearest, best-corroborated source in the fan-out — is where the work lives, and where our AI SEO services operate.

  4. Your analytics can no longer see the whole story. An AI Mode session can research you, compare you, and rule you in or out without a single visit your tools would record. Impressions holding steady while clicks fall in Search Console is the classic symptom. The only reliable check is direct: run your real buyer questions through AI Mode monthly and log whether you're named, in what context, and against which competitors.

05

How do you access and use Google AI Mode?

In the US, it's built in: the "AI Mode" tab on google.com next to All/Images/News, the dedicated mode in the Google mobile app, or the AI-powered search box experiences Google has been rolling out since I/O 2026. There's no separate signup and no fee for the core experience (some agentic features tie to Google AI subscriptions). Use it the way its adopters do — full questions with real constraints ("compare X and Y for a family of five under $400") — and it will show you exactly what your customers now see: one synthesized answer, a few named sources, and everyone else invisible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Google AI Mode in simple terms?

It's Google Search answering you directly. Instead of ten ranked links, AI Mode has Google's Gemini AI research your question across the web — running many searches at once — and write a single conversational answer with cited sources you can follow up on. It rolled out in 2025 and passed a billion monthly users by May 2026.

What is Google AI Mode vs Gemini?

Gemini is Google's AI model family and also the name of its standalone assistant app. AI Mode is the search experience inside Google Search that runs on Gemini and grounds every answer in live web results. Same intelligence, different products: Gemini the app is a general assistant; AI Mode is Google Search, reinvented.

Is Google AI Mode free?

The core AI Mode experience is free and built into Google Search — no signup, no subscription. Some advanced capabilities announced at I/O 2026, like ongoing information agents, tie to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions, but everyday conversational search doesn't.

How does AI Mode decide what to show?

Through query fan-out: it splits your question into sub-questions, searches Google's index in parallel, and synthesizes the best passages into one cited answer. Sources that are indexed, clearly structured, and corroborated across the web are the ones it names — the mechanics we break down in how to rank in Google Gemini.

Is Google's AI Mode any good?

For complex questions — comparisons, planning, multi-constraint research — it's genuinely strong, which the adoption curve reflects (queries more than doubling every quarter). It still makes mistakes and says so in its own disclaimer, so verify anything consequential.

Can I turn Google AI Mode off?

You can simply not use it — classic-style results remain available, including Google's "Web" filter for plain links. What you can't control is other people using it: your customers increasingly search there whether or not you do, which is why checking your AI Mode visibility matters more than your personal settings.

What does AI Mode mean for SEO?

SEO remains the eligibility layer — Google says AI Mode has no special requirements beyond standard Search. But the reward shifted from ranking to being cited: entity clarity, extractable answers, and web-wide corroboration decide who gets named. Same foundation, new scoreboard.
