The Silicon Docks paradox
Ireland has a strange distinction in AI search: the companies building the engines run Europe from Dublin, while most Irish businesses are invisible inside those engines' answers.
OpenAI made Dublin its European headquarters in 2023; Anthropic followed in 2024, choosing Dublin as its Europe, Middle East and Africa base (The Irish Times), and by late 2025 both were hunting for larger Dublin offices to expand European operations (Silicon Republic). They joined Google, Meta, and LinkedIn, whose European headquarters already anchor the Silicon Docks. Meanwhile Irish consumers have adopted the products faster than almost anyone: 48.4% of Ireland's working-age population used a generative-AI product in Q1 2026 — a global top-five figure, ahead of France and the UK (Microsoft AI Diffusion Report coverage; the report itself puts the global average at just 17.8%).
So the demand side is solved: nearly half the country is already asking AI engines questions, many of them commercial. The supply side is the gap. Ask ChatGPT for a recommendation in most Irish SME categories and it reaches for whatever thin evidence exists — a stale directory, a UK competitor with better content, or nothing. That gap is the opportunity, and it is still wide open outside a handful of competitive Dublin categories.
What "ranking on google.ie" means now
Two facts frame the Google side. First, Google carries 94.09% of Irish search traffic (StatCounter, June 2026) — whatever Google's AI layer says about your category, most of Ireland sees it. Second, google.ie is no longer a separate destination: Google began retiring country-code domains in April 2025, redirecting them to google.com, because results have been localised by the searcher's location — not the domain they typed — since 2017.
The consequence: there is no google.ie to "target." Google decides you are an Irish result from your entity signals — Irish address and phone conventions, Irish-relevant content, Irish reviews and citations. AI Overviews then inherit that same locality judgement: the answer a searcher in Cork sees is assembled from what Google already believes about Irish entities. And the chat engines localise differently again — ChatGPT and Perplexity infer geography from the conversation and from their sources, which is why the third-party Irish citations covered below do so much of the work.
Entity signals: making an Irish business resolvable
AI engines cite businesses they can resolve to one unambiguous identity, corroborated in independent places. Ireland gives you two assets most markets lack.
The CRO record. Every Irish company has a Companies Registration Office number, and registry-derived listings republish those official details across the web. If your site, your schema, and your Google Business Profile all match your CRO-registered identity, an AI model sees the same facts on your domain, in a state-derived record, and in Google's index — and you become a safe answer to give. The classic failure is the trading-name split: registered as one name, trading as another, with no page connecting the two. Reconcile them explicitly on your About page and in Organization schema (legalName vs name, plus sameAs to your real profiles).
The .ie domain. Unlike .com, a .ie registration is checked: every applicant must prove a real connection to Ireland before the registry grants the name (.IE Registry). That verification makes .ie a genuine trust cue — for Irish users and for engines weighing whether a business is authentically Irish — even though it is not, on its own, a ranking mechanism. If you serve the Irish market on a .com, compensate with heavier corroboration elsewhere.
Add the universal layer on top: identical name-address-phone everywhere (Eircode included), complete Organization schema, and a named, findable principal. A real founder with a LinkedIn profile linked from the site consistently beats an anonymous brand in trust-heavy Irish categories — legal, financial advice, healthcare, construction.
The Irish sources AI engines actually cite
When an engine answers a "best X in Ireland" question, it paraphrases high-authority third-party pages — and Ireland's citation stack is compact enough to name:
The play is not blanket outreach. Earn two or three real placements in the group matching your category, then verify the facts those pages state about you — name, specialism, location — because engines repeat them verbatim.
Dublin queries vs county queries
Irish search intent splits geographically, and the AI layer mirrors it. Dublin queries behave like big-city queries: category-anchored, competitive, often B2B ("employment solicitor Dublin," "managed IT services Dublin") — won with category authority, named experts, and press. The rest of the country searches by county and town ("physio Athlone," "roofer County Clare"), where the map pack and locality corroboration decide who gets named. A business serving three counties needs its footprint stated explicitly — service-area pages that name real towns, not templates — because when Gemini is asked for "a good landscaper near Naas," it reaches for businesses whose Naas connection is legible. For how that same city-versus-region split gets worked in practice, our local SEO services page sets out the method.
Write it all in Irish English — optimise, centre, organisation — and in Irish vocabulary: solicitor not attorney, tradesperson, GAA-adjacent local references where natural, Eircodes in address markup.
The order of operations for Irish businesses
- Resolve the entity. CRO-consistent identity, Organization schema, trading-name reconciliation, named founder. Nothing else compounds until engines know who you are.
- Answer-format the money pages. Question H2s phrased the way Irish buyers ask, a direct 40–60 word answer at the top of each, FAQ schema.
- Check the gates. Confirm GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended are not blocked at your CDN or robots.txt — we once found a single WAF rule silently returning 403s to every search and AI crawler at once — and publish an llms.txt.
- Earn Irish corroboration. Two or three genuine placements in the press/community stack above, per our generative engine optimisation approach.
- Feed the local layer. Review velocity, complete Google Business Profiles, county-anchored pages where the intent exists.
- Measure the answers. Monthly checks of what each engine actually says for your money questions. That measurement discipline is the core of our AI SEO services.
Budget context for all of this — what Irish providers charge and where AI work fits in a retainer — is in our companion piece on SEO costs in Ireland.
Can a US agency do this for an Irish business?
Yes, with the caveat stated plainly: AISEO USA is a US-based agency serving Irish businesses remotely. We have no Irish office and claim none. The work — entity optimisation, schema, answer-ready content, citation strategy, crawler access, AI-answer tracking — is delivered online and measured where it counts: what the engines return for Irish queries. What you should demand from any provider, Irish or not, is Ireland-correct execution — Irish spelling and vocabulary, CRO-aware entity work, citations from sources that matter here. Judge the output, not the office address.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is AI SEO in Ireland?
It is the practice of getting an Irish business named in AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews — alongside classic rankings and the map pack. It combines a resolvable entity (CRO details, consistent naming, schema), answer-ready content, reviews, and citations from trusted Irish sources.
Do Google AI Overviews show for Irish searches?
Yes. AI Overviews run across Google's markets including Ireland, and with Google holding 94.09% of Irish search (StatCounter, June 2026), any Overview in your category sits above every traditional result most Irish searchers see. Businesses named inside it capture the consideration set.
Does a .ie domain help with AI visibility?
It helps as a trust signal, not a ranking switch. Every .ie registration is verified for a real connection to Ireland by the .IE Registry, which makes it meaningful corroboration that a business is authentically Irish — but engines localise by your entity signals and content, so a .com with strong Irish corroboration can compete.
What happened to google.ie?
Google began retiring country-code domains in April 2025; google.ie now redirects to google.com. Localisation follows the searcher's location, not the domain — so Irish visibility is earned through entity signals, Irish content, and Irish citations rather than by targeting a ccTLD.
Which Irish sources make AI engines cite a business?
National press (RTÉ, The Irish Times, Irish Independent, TheJournal.ie), tech and business press (Silicon Republic, Business Post), the boards.ie community, Google reviews, and established directories like Golden Pages. A few genuine placements in the right group for your category beat mass submissions.
Does my CRO registration matter for AI SEO?
Indirectly but materially. Registry-derived records republish your official details, giving engines an independent corroboration point. Ensure your website, schema, and Google Business Profile match your registered identity — an unreconciled trading name is exactly the ambiguity that stops an engine citing you.
Why are Irish SMEs invisible in AI answers if the AI companies are based in Dublin?
Because engine answers reflect the evidence on the open web, not office geography. OpenAI and Anthropic running European operations from Dublin does nothing for an Irish plumber's citations. Irish adoption is top-five globally at 48.4%, but most Irish SMEs have not yet built the entity and citation footprint engines need — which is the opportunity.
